Exclusive Interview
Gloom-Magazine
What is your magazine about?
A rejection of authority and control in our submissive society, revealing alternative identities and reacting to a disillusioned forecast.
Who’s behind the project?
Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Gloom magazine is published by defalign, David Millhouse, Éloïse Parrack. Generating a dialogue of opinions and constructive investigation through expressive mediums.
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
Our environment is always reflected in our work, we case study the individual, their image and motivations. The magazine works as a journal; a chosen theme is explored throughout the year.
What are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
The magazine has to travel, to reach unexpected hands and to develop its own identity.
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
The main difficulties are time to spend on the magazine aside from paying the bills. A time machine that we could hire out to raise income!
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Currently it seems to be photographers, designers, poets and fashion enthusiasts.
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Yes. Being independent is crucial; we rely on ourselves to produce the whole visual impression.
Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
No. Not much happens on television these days, especially in the UK, the rolling news reports are shallow, the adverts waste time and it’s not that educational. We do not own a television anymore.
What is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
We are currently looking for quality and affordable printers in Europe.
Which magazines influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
Ones that can create empathy with the subject connect with the personality or lifestyle of the reader and encourage creative dialogues. Inspiring design and format are integral to the content and ideas within.
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself as a maniac?
We get many magazines from all over the world and also like to visit library archives to go back in time. Recently we have been purposely acquiring magazines that we dislike, as a detection of morals, a careful study of poisons.
