Exclusive Interview
I love advertising (and it’s part of my job too) but I think they’re dull these days, I get bored looking at them, it’s all the same everywhere.
What is your magazine about?
The PrintFolio is a personnal magazine based on intimate luxury fashion. It is a mixte between an editorial and a novel, as text and photographies tell a scenario, just like in a film. But mostly it’s on women, a male vision of course !
Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
It’s a very personnal magazine, so I’m behind this… I’m a fashion photographer and have been since 1999. My motivation is to be able to do personnal work and incarnate ideas without money, announcers, or any other problems touching fashion mags and photographers these days. I’ve worked for many magazines such as the French ELLE, Madame Figaro, MUTEEN, 20 Ans, Dépêche Mode but, apart from the little ones, I never get to do what I want as a photographer.
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
The whole magazine is self produced ! I get little money from sponsors and I deal with this. A lot of time is given to each issue, about 6 months ! It’s once a year.
What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
Photo shoots and castings. Then the text.
What are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Quality ! I think I’m the only one taking care of the “fabrication” and the choice of papers, each issue is printed in high class printers and on hi class fiber paper of at least 130 gr !
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
Lack of money and (more) sponsors ! Better Internationnal diffusion.
Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
At the top !!! … but still independent !
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
I’m not sure and I don’t really know but my guess is people working in advertising and fashion, graphic designers, maybe some movie makers…
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Of course !!! It’s the essence of it ! If it weren’t, it probably would be printed on cheap papers and have very little place for fashion shoots, replaced with ugly ads or what more… And I believe in small teams better than big companies that copy themselves all the time.
What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
I have just the fourth cover granted for advertising so far, and I took it because it was an angel so on the theme of issue #3 !
I love advertizing (and it’s part of my job too) but I think they’re dull these days, I get bored looking at them, it’s all the same everywhere.
I’m not against advertising driven editorials as long as they don’t forget that they are still magazines (unlike 99% ad driven magazines)…
Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
No. No one need to… They need to go on theaters instead !
What is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
I’m very bad with him ! No but I’m very demanding I think… I listen to him though on very technical problems. I usually spend one week there ! I love seeing my pages getting out of the press, it’s pure happiness !
Which magazines influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
I’m more influenced by movies for this is my “background” but of course I love the French and Italian Vogue. I look for real “photographers stuff” ! I love girls to look like girls ! Not too “plastic” ! Fashion is about making people dream, just like movies, it just seems no one dares to have fun these days, or look at a woman with desire !
I think it’s a shame, men shouldn’t be ashamed at looking at a beautiful woman in the street !
What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
Of course I think it could have been much much better ! I also have more credibility now !
What question did you never ask in your magazine but would have liked to?
Why do we like girls so much ??? (lol)
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself as a maniac?
Yes ! 10 maybe, 20 ???
