Exclusive Interview

First we created our contextual concept, then we had the hard job to decide about the works to be shown in the magazine.

What is your magazine about?
LIESCHEN primary shows current works of students (photography, graphic design, film/camera and product design) of university of arts and sciences Dortmund. These works are presented in the context of a manifesto for the assiduity revolution. Assiduity as an ambivalent German virtue is imminent to sink into oblivion. We disapprove with that.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Students of the university of arts applied sciences founded LIESCHEN. Our team stepped into affairen-magazin's (www.affairen.net) shoes, which created the first magazine of our university. We thought that it is important not to keep all the create work in the school, but to show it to all those who are interested. We are Judith Anna Czech, Elena Schneider, Annika Janssen, Christian Chramm, Daniel Treufeld, Sabrina Merdzanovic, Eva Strauch.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
First we created our contextual concept, and then we had the hard job to decide about the works to be shown in the magazine. With no financial support of the university we had to look for sponsoring. it took almost one year to produce LIESCHEN. Now we are doing the distribution ourselves, which is not less work. We are a team of six now.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
It was important to have the basic idea in the beginning. Since we knew that our magazine is the revolution of assiduity, ideas were rolling. The second important step was the finances, of course.

What are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Mostly the 45 works of the students keep the magazine interesting. The oversupply of magazines makes it hard to keep the interests of people.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
Thee largest difficulty was and still is the money. With a little sponsoring and our own money it went somehow. Now we hope that we will sell a lot of magazines.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
Since the ba/ma system even kept our school now, there will be no future for a magazine like this. But we hope that younger students will keep it up.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Our main audience are students of other design-schools in Germany, Swiss, Austria. We hope that, even if LIESCHEN is in German, students from all over Europe like it. There is a lot of inspiration in the magazine. Secondary people with an design-near job like art directors, photographers and so on.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
As long as you are a student you are independent and you should use this independency, as long as you can. Maybe it is over once.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
We just were happy to have a few advertisements in our magazine. But it did not influence our content at all.

Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
You can not animate a printed magazine. So it depends on the interests.

What is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
The printer produced our magazine. We love him.

Which magazines influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
We have a lot of different persons in our team, so this question is difficult. I guess main interests are music, typography, literature, photography, design, graphic, fashion, technical and digital news.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
Lieschen is no 01. For our team it will always be the no 01.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself as a maniac?
I buy about two magazines a month. I am no maniac, but I like to be inspired.
