TOKION Interview
Magazine favourite(s) from your childhood
CHRIS: GAMES magazine, Hustler magazine
Magazine favourite(s) that inspired you in your career
CHRIS: THE FACE
Magazine favourite(s) now
CHRIS: GAMES magazine, Hustler magazine
What else inspires and informs you?
CHRIS: Travelling extensively, meeting new people and having those late night conversations that affect and enlighten how you think about and view things in the world.
Proudest moment of your career in magazines.
CHRIS: Hanging out with Brian Eno, Jarvis Cocker and Morrissey… Who were a few of my Art School idols… And seeing our Creativity Now conference go Global…
Why?
CHRIS: Rewarding… and Fun.
Most well-known moment.
CHRIS: Sending around to the office a photoshopped image of me jumping out of a cake…
Why is it so well known?
CHRIS: Because it was ridiculous and embarrassing, which I didn’t seem to realize at the time of sending… And they will never let me forget I did that… And its referred to quite often.
Most important lesson learnt, and from who/where?
Maxwell: Clowns are great, from Kate; and never wear a necktie with a short-sleeve button-down, from Jay.
CHRIS: Make sure the tape recorder works… Learned after an amazing interview with James Franco then finding out it wasn’t on the tape.
Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favourite in your collection?
CHRIS: I keep The FACE and CONTENTS. I was Editor at Contents prior to my days at Tokion… So it's a sentimental remembrance of how little I truly knew when I started in magazines…
Choose three words to define your (favourite) magazine.
CHRIS: Intelligent, Sincere… and Sexy is always nice.
Why do you work in magazines?
CHRIS: I have an insatiable appetite for information and music and film and design and fashion and art and travel… Magazines appear to be the only place you can be imbedded in all of them at the same time and in different combinations that make for infinite variations… Keeps you incredibly interested in everything.
If currently involved in a magazine:
What is the magazine about?
Chris… Where art + fashion have a drink and a cigarette and discuss art, film, travel and politics.
Who reads it?
CHRIS: The creative community.
How do you find innovative ways to talk to your readers?
CHRIS: By involving them in the conversation.. not being pretentious but wide-eyed and fascinated with what we cover.
What do you like about the challenge of working in magazines?
CHRIS: It never gets boring… That’s for sure.
What don't you like about the challenge of working in magazines?
CHRIS: The stress of deadlines.
In five years, what will you be working on?
CHRIS: Deciding on the color of Tokion’s private jet and selecting the uniforms for the stewardesses.
We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Finally, please give us a brief outline of your career:
When and where did you start working in magazines?
CHRIS: I went to Film school and after began working as a Producer of a weekly Arts show in Savannah GA… Got to meet the owner of Contents Magazine which was a magazine focused on young Hollywood… eventually left the Producing gig and was hired as an Editor… the transition from Producing Video and Film to producing print was quite an easy transition… Then started at Tokion on the editorial side and am now Publisher… It’s been a long strange trip.
What are you working on right now?
CHRIS: Finishing up this questionnaire and about to go buy my niece a birthday present.
