Exclusive Interview

A lot of passion

What is your magazine about?
"fashion & interviews" with a focus on both emerging and senior talents in the fields of fashion, photography, art, design, illusraiton and the creative industries in general.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Nico Magazine is published by Mike Koedinger, Luxembourg's leading independent publisher working as a publisher since 1994 and running its Luxembourg based media group www.mikekoedinger.com.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
As a bi-annual, we've time to think and talk about themes. Discussions take place in Paris and In Luxembourg with Philippe Graff, Paris-based-managing-editor, Angelina A Rafii, fashion editor and Aurelio Angius, my associate sales manager for advertising. The magazine is then produced by an international collective of journalists, writers, photographers, stylists, illustrators.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
Deciding to found the title back in 2006, publish the first issue in spring 2007 and get the magazine distributed worldwide. Decide in early 2008 to make Nico a Paris-based magazine with the help of Philippe Graff. Nico, as many titles from the independent scene, lives on advertising budgets spend by the fashion industry - so it's really important, to have offices and a permanent staff in Paris.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
To have a clear editorial concept, a good art direction, a lot of passion and many, many time to invest.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
It's always about the money.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
Still to be quality-driven.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
The magazine is now entirely french / english. We've many readers in Paris, but we distribute also in NY, LA, Tokyo, Australia and all over Europe including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, ... The reader is working in the creative industries, has a strong education and some money to spend.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Yes. Yes.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
With a clear definition of the magazine, it's audience and the editorial concept.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
I really love it's silver cover with an illustration by Christina K. It had already it's soul and got a good distribution.

Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career.
First, the magazine of the eighties: Interview, The Face, i-D, Tempo, ... as they were really different from what the magazine world had to offer. Today, I'm looking for very strong visuals, good stories and a personal concept. Good erotic is still difficult to find, I really like S Magazine from Copenhagen and Paradis from Paris.

Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
Yes, I've magazines all around my house on several floors, probably 3,000 titles since the 80ties. I recently bought a vintage US-Playboy issue from 69. Super beautiful!

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
Much more then I can read, or sometimes even properly flip through. Yes. But with many titles around I've learned to be selective.

We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Markus Peichl, Tyler Brûlé, Lothar Eckstein.
