What is your magazine about?
Bulgaria is about life. Of all weird things that surround us and also about world and stuff.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Bulgaria was founded 2000 by four graphic design students from University of Art and Design, Helsinki. Now the some what loose core that publishes Bulgaria Magazine consists of a group of very nice people working in different fields of visual communication and design.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
Case study BULGARIA 05: - 7 months of dreaming, wondering, holidaying, drinking, smiling, planning, wondering how to fund the magazine. - 3 months of ad selling and sponsor hunting. - 1 month of tense creation. - 1 day party.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
After the founding, we have to say every issue.

Which are the key incredients for the success of your magazine?
Genuine interest in publishing an individual magazine and the research of the possibilities of the medium.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
Funding.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
Somewhere safe.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Very intelligent and nice people.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
The driving force behind our magazine is complete freedom of expression. It is the medium where everything is possible. We think that remaining independent is very important in order to sustain the creative freedom.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
We love to have some advertisement for the obvious reason of funding the magazine but to date we haven’t had to take in any a-d-e’s. We really hope that the day will not come.

Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
Hopefully not while reading the magazine.

Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
Usually very warm but it doesn’t play main role in development.

Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
Invidual approach and interesting content.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
We see younger us.

What question did you never ask in your magazine but would have liked to?
We have asked just the questions that we wanted to.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
A lot. Well at least in intervals.
