Exclusive Interview
Greenager
What is your magazine about?
It’s about culture on all levels, about music and environment, about sustainability, about art and talent.
Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Normal boys who use their abilities which are too often underrated by the labour system. We started almost for fun, as time went by we got aware of our means. Now it’s a steady bet to produce always something new, something better. Our background is the underground movement of Rome city.
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
Time was when we were 40 persons working together, but that was muddling and less productive. At present it’s 15 of us, 20 at most, from the conception of an issue to the distribution. It takes a few time to put the ideas together, one week at most. It takes two weeks to produce the file and then one week to print and delivery it. One month in all, but we take our time and we come out every two months.
What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
All the steps to get to number 0. The radical change from a more didactic but a bit anonymous magazine to one more sharp, biting and satirical. The change from a4 to a5.
Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
The freedom of the editing. The mutual confidence of the collaborators.
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
Money.
Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
I don’t know, we don’t think about future too much. It’s something that can end any time. This is not a limit, however, it incites us to give our best.
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
We chose a target from 18 to 35 years old but that’s faint.
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
The only strategy is to stay independent.
What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
Fortunately, contents are absolutely free. Advertising never ever affects us.
What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
There’s still something good, few stuff, but the latest issue is always my favourite one.
Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career.
Il Male.
Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
Yes I always keep them, my favourite one is the latest, as I said before, even better the issue that’s about to come out.
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
I’m not a maniac. I get 15 magazines, let’s say, most of them the edited in Rome.
We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Scarti.
