Colophon 2011

Good Bad Ugly

What is your magazine about?
Good Bad Ugly isn't about one certain thing like films or gaming. I would say Good Bad Ugly has two motivations: (1) to try and produce a half decent magazine for free and (2) asking people not to accept the notion that it's ok to pay £4 for a magazine when it's essentially rubbish.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Good Bad Ugly is an e-zine so we have slightly different motivations then paper magazines. As our costs are very low we can be more noble in our motivations. Our background is in entertaining each other and our friends. Our motivation is to produce a magazine that we'd want to read and as large publishers didn't seem like they'd being doing this any time soon we decided to do it ourselves. The founders? I'm not sure we're entitled to such a grand title! We're just the people that are motivated and have the attitude of "if you want it, you're probably going to have to do it yourself", so Good Bad Ugly was born.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
Our team is growing, anyone that wants to get involved can. Originally Good Bad Ugly started off as a good idea at the back of my head. I dragged Carly Morris (our proof reader and feature writing) into the fold. She in turn dragged one of her friends, Charlotte Nordgren into write as well. I convinced a fantastic photographer, Joseph Watts, to join our ranks and finally an amazing illustrator in Emily Wallis also volunteered. It takes roughly a month to turn an issue around as no one gets paid for Good Bad Ugly and it's done in our spare time.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
Well, we've only just e-published our first issue so I guess that was reasonably important! Bringing the team together has been the biggest step. Everyone claims to have a brilliant idea rumbling around in their heads, but it's not many that actually sort it out.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
I think it's the attitude of the magazine. We haven't got any financial worries, we don't have to worry about advertisers or subscribers and I think, I hope that our attitude reflects our readers.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
The difficulties are trying to fit Good Bad Ugly in around your life. Everyone either works a full time job or is a full time student in their final years so it can be a bit of a squeeze, but it is a very nice distraction. I'm not sure what could help us, probably a little bit of money! If we had some, we could invest it in increasing the readership and giving ourselves the odd luxury like a production budget.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
I have no idea. At the moment it would be fantastic to still see the magazine alive in 5 years time. That would probably be the ultimate goal.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Our readers are you and I. They're from all sorts of backgrounds, but are more likely to be a university student/graduate or someone working within or that has a creative background.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Being independent gives us our freedom. It's not a strategy, it's just the way it is.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
Currently we don't carry any advertising. Ultimately we would but it will not influence our content.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
It's only just come out so it's still pretty clear in my head! Looking back two weeks I think we made the right decision losing a couple of pages and a few features.

Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career.
I have no idea! We take influences from everywhere and anywhere.

Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
I have some old magazines knocking around, but they're more as reference tools to see what others have and are doing.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
No I'm not a maniac. I used to spend £30 a month on magazines and read them for about an hour collectively. That's the reason for Good Bad Ugly. Hopefully we're saving someone from spending £4 on a magazine so they'll have something to read at lunchtime.

We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Predictably Felix Dennis, his company is doing amazing things in the e-publishing sector. Also the guys at State of Play and Notion have some amazing content and ideas.
