Exclusive Interview

STRAPAZIN

What is your magazine about?
Comics, rather the experimental kind.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
STRAPAZIN was founded in 1984 by a bunch of illustrators, comic-artists, graphic designers from Germany and Switzerland. Influenced by French comics and comic-magazines we were eager to start a comic-magazine in German language.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
A group of 2 - 4 people produce one issue in about three to four weeks.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
1984: starting it in Germany, 1985: moving to Zurich, Switzerland 1987: we had the idea of publishing advertisements in quadratic form, drawn by our artists. The clients get 400 stickers with their ad on it.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Constancy on the editor's part. High quality on the artist's part.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
More subscribers worldwide.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
Same place as today, but more subscribers.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Comic-artists, comic lovers, designers, teachers, healers, musicians, publicans, waitresses, cab drivers. drinkers, lighthouse keepers, hot air balloon pilots, journalists, housewives, sound engineers, ...

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
No strategy. But it's important, yes. We wouldn't like to have publishers telling us what to print.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
We love advertising. Our artists love to create ads. It's influencing our content in a visual way only.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
It looks a bit homemade, but otherwise it's not bad.

Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career.
RAW, The Comic Journal, Drawn & Quarterly, Métal Hurlant, L'écho des Savanes, Blatt (München), Stilett (Zürich), ...

Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
I hardly keep any old copies of magazines.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
I read a lot of fanzines sent to us, but I wouldn't call myself a maniac.

We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Christian Gasser (STRAPAZIN) gasserchr@bluewin.ch, Kati Rickenbach (PlusPlus) katirickenbach@gmx.net.
