New Photography

Capricious is a new magazine based in Amsterdam featuring emerging photographic talent from all over the world.
It’s only photo no text.

It is reflecting a ‘Capricious World’, meaning to give a look behind the scenes of a very uniform, standardized and commercial world by giving an alternative perspective.

What else inspires and informs you?
Nature.

Proudest moment of your career in magazines.
Why?

The release of the first Capricious, in April 2004, because I had achieved my goal.

Most well known moment. Why is it so well known?
There is not really a well known moment, as far as I know. Maybe some rowdy release events…isn’t that up to other people to decide, I wonder?

Most important lesson learnt, and from who/where?
Never stop fighting for what you believe in- with integrity. I learned it from the forest spirit.

Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favourite in your collection?

My own magazines, like Capricious and GLU? Or other magazines? I do keep our magazines and my favorite would be the first issue of Capricious. If you mean other people’s magazines - I do keep old magazines - I have the whole collection of Purple Sexe, which were fantastic, and the whole collection of KUTT Magazine, which was the initial version of GLU Magazine.

Choose three words to define your (favourite) magazine.
Integrity, subtle, explosive.

Why do you work in magazines?
Who knows!?!?! Well, Capricious’ mission is to create possibilities for artists, and it’s very rewarding and amazing when that happens.

If currently involved in a magazine: What is the magazine about?
Capricious is a magazine for emerging fine art photographers from all over the world.

Who reads it?
Everybody, of course…

How do you find innovative ways to talk to your readers?
By leaving room for the eye to explore.

What do you like about the challenge of working in magazines?
I like the potential to make possibilities happen.

What don't you like about the challenge of working in magazines?
The work never ends…

In five years, what will you be working on?
Lots of artist books and Capricious as well, of course! Maybe capricious will have become an empire for the emerging artist!

We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
I don’t know whom you’ve asked, but Henrik Timonen, from Sweden, is great.

Finally, please give us a brief outline of your career: When and where did you start working in magazines?
I started in 2003 in New York and then Amsterdam.

What are the most significant titles you've worked on?
Capricious Magazine, GLU Magazine, Famous and LTTR.

What are you working on right now?
Capricious #8, which is a special edition poster issue. The theme is Animals. It’s fantastic.

E-mail interview from April 2008.
