Exclusive Interview
"We want to be free forever"
What is your magazine about?
Graffiti, graphic design, photography.
Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
The Garage Magazine project born in 1998. At the beginning it was an homemade magazine strictly devoted to graffiti. Founders are ex-writers with the passion of graphic design, urban trends and photography. All the people involved in it are friends and they all work together to every single project.
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
The editorial team is composed by 6 people + many contributors from different countries. Garage Magazine is a bi-annual, because the aim is to put a general high quality level.
What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
The introduction of different contents (graphic design, photography and fashion) and the distribution growth.
Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Good quality photos and articles, good artists unknown or famous.
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
Distribution and advertising, mostly.
Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
Everywhere except from the White House.
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Mostly people are 14-35 years old, 75% male. Most of them are graffiti writers or people involved in hip hop.
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Independence is freedom. We want to be free for ever.
What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
We are not interested in having new ads if they have to influence our contents.
Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
It depends… The word TV it’s too generic. Unfortunately good quality TV is really hard to find everywhere…
Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
We have a good relation, nothing more.
Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
Too many to mention. One of our favorite project is “Intersection”, a new way to read the car’s world. Impressive.
What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
It’s funny, but it’s a piece of history: most of graffiti photos in it could not be seen everywhere else.
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
Around 25, most of them are news, economic and politic magazines. Plus some music and fashion ones. And of course any kind of graffiti magazine in the world
