Exclusive Interview
Grafik.
What is your magazine about?
Graphic design and the things that interest graphic designers - typography, photography, illustration, fashion, music, art.
Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Caroline Roberts (editor) and Angharad Lewis (deputy editor), both also co-owners of the magazine.
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
We're a monthly magazine so effectively its a month but we're always planning several months in advance. We're a small team - 2 editorial, 2 design and 1 commercial + lots of regular contributers and correspondents.
What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
Relaunching as Grafik (formerly Graphics International) in 2003. Management buyout 2005.
Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Hard work, a happy team, tea and biscuits.
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
Cash to expand the business and a magic solution to the online problem.
Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
Still independent, with more pages, more readers, a gallery space, a book publishing arm and a bakery.
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, creative people.
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Yes, and yes.
What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
Advertising doesn't influence our content but we like to make happy relationships with loyal advertisers and people who support us by collaborating on projects and events.
What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
Exciting, slightly crazy, ambitious, lots of ideas crammed into a small space.
Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career.
Smash Hits, Jackie, The Face, i-D, O32c, Tate Etc, The Wire, Interview.
Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
I don't tend to revisit old magazines, I like looking at new ones.
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
There is a constant stream of mags passing through the Grafik office. I guess between us it would amount to a mania.
We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Peet Pienaar.
