Founded in 1997

Defrag Magazine captures the spirit that animates the elements of urban reality. It individualizes and extrapolates its characteristics, fragmenting the complex web of relationships of which it consists. The study of these many facets gives the magazine the opportunity to lend visibility and voice to the opaque differences of society. Street art, experimental music, innovative graphics, engaging messages and elements in web design give background and soundtrack to the urban life styles which Defrag desires to broaden.

Exclusive Interview

“The best trip of our life"

What is your magazine about?

Art, Music and Urban Culture.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!

The Editor and Art Director Francesco Galluppi, is a graphic designer since 1990. When he was 14 years old he discovered the Hip Hop culture and then he started to dance and paint. Many years later he decided to print a magazine which can talk about this culture and he called it Defrag. The magazine is grown-up a lot and now there is a staff of 5 people (plus many other contributors around the world) who love, study and do a lot of research about urban art and their representative.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?

We do a lot of researches. Everyday we find something new and interesting, many subjects to deepen and study. Sometimes it’s embarrassing because we discover so many things to talk about that it’s difficult to decide what publish on the winter issue rather then the summer one.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?

We have increased the pages, the contents and their quality, the excellence of the artworks published, the high quality of printing and of course the double language (Italian/English) of the texts. All these details makes Defrag a unique magazine in Italy.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?

The passion, the seriousness, the professionalism, the dedication and the respect towards our readers.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?

The difficulties with we are confronted are the default of seriousness of some Italian “professionals”, which should work with us and not create problems. The magazine will improve for the same reason, working with professional people.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?

Our objective is to develop Defrag, making this magazine a valid mass media, for promoting and give information to people, not only the fan of urban art but a larger audience.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?

Our readers and subscribers are: graphic designers, artists, teachers, editors, journalists, students, fashion and character designers, collectors and b-boys, from around the world.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?

For Defrag it’s fundamental to remain independent, because the magazine can continue to follow its route: without any compromises. So Defrag can be faithful to its “soul”. Obviously this isn’t an easy choice.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?

Good, because the advertisement is in target with the magazine. For example some artists featured on Defrag manage or work with a brand. The advertisements don’t influence the contents. Being a six-monthly magazine Defrag don’t publish editorials but the advertisements published on it have a great exposure. Our readers called Defrag “book-magazine” because they collect every issue in their bookshelf. So the advertisements can be seen for many months and years!

Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?

Sometimes… just to remember why they don’t watch it.

Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?

The printer is like our best-friend. The Art Director is there while the pages of Defrag are in printing. During this phase, he works together with him, he checks everything, from the film to the paper, until the binding. Because the quality of the magazine depends on these details too.

Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?

We buy a lot of magazine and books, on each one we find something we like. Some for the contents, some other for the photos, or the graphic layout. Everything can be useful to discover, study and learn new things.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?

That we have done many things, we have grown-up a lot, we have met many artists and that it will continue to be the best trip of our life.
