Founded in 2002

Beginning in 2002, and having produced 18 and a half online issues, using various technologies including Flash, Powerpoint and Quicktime video. Each cycle of online issues becomes a printed Compendium, the first was called "Love the Universe and Everything", followed by "Fashion=Fiction" and the multi-formatted "Chaos Happens" book that in almost 300 pages changes shape and size like browser windows, this was followed by the giant picture book "Everything will be ok" with accompanying 90 minute DVD of original time-based art and video.

Exclusive Interview

This is a magazine

What is your magazine about?
This is a magazine about nothing.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Founded by Donnachie/Simionato 2002.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
Maybe a week or two sometimes much more. The compendia (books) take about 6 months or so. We are two people, working with around 100 artists across the internets.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
step 1. we had the idea to make a magazine, step 2. we made it, step 3. we kept on making it.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
If by success you mean popularity, then that ingredient is freely available internet.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
Not get bored. Not be boring.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
Beyond the thunderdome.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
See our collaboration with artist Jennifer Dalton called "How artists live".

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
If by independent you mean self-financed, then no not important. If by independent you mean we do whatever we want fuck you, then yes important.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
We have no advertising. No we don't care.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
It's ok.

Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career.
Smash Hits.

Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
We don't keep many old magazines. We gave our collection of zines to the DOCVA in Milan (open to the public).

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
One or two a month. Literary things mainly, nothing too visual. We don't consume so many magazines, like not wanting to eat chicken if you work in a KFC.

We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Rupert Murdoch.
