Our magazine is created by and for creators.
What is your magazine about?
Blank is a changing space that welcomes projects of art, design, vanguard and creation. With this intention, Blank was born as a paper magazine that identifies the influence of the digital subculture on the reality and that tries, starting off of the devotion by dicesity, to give to the creators an inspiration content and a space to show and to analyze the digital scratches of our world. Starting off of these digital scratches, we have find the paradox that the digitalis aspires to being material and the material wants to get involved with the digitalis.
Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
We are a small team (Salvador Cuenca, Aurora Sánchez, Peio M.Tirapu and Felipe Medrano), that works with a huge group of collaborators from all over the world. All we have different origins, but all from arts, design, audio-visual communication and creativity. We have our own jobs as freelance designers, teachers or editors.
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
We have broken the presentation and format codes, each number is different, not only from the previous ones, but from each unit of the same issue. So in each issue we spent all the time it needs to, as we are and independent publication, we don’t mind the time, we just want to make the best issue we could have made.
What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
The most important step of our magazine came with the issue 03 in which we put original artwork in each unit. It was something that made the difference with the rest of magazines, and we have been doing it since there.
Which are the key incredients for the success of your magazine?
Blank is space and is work, work that gives a creator to its readers (other creators), something of price superior to the face value os the product, in this case, Blank becomes a deposit taker and a bridge between creators.
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
We have made our own difficulties, because we allways look for an unique issue.
Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
We don’t think in the future, we allways try to think just in the next issue and try to do it as best as possible.
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Our magazine is created by and for creators.
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Yes, the most important concept of our magazine is that we are free as ourselves.
What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
We don’t ussually have advertisers. When we have some, it is just because an interchange of services. We don’t let them get any influence in our publication.
Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
We can’t force the readers to do or not to do anything, but our contents don’t ussually appear on the TV.
Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
We know them for long time, but we decide every single thing in the development.
Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
We try to make a difference between us and the rest of publications.
What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
It was just a starting point, we are very happy because is the birth of a concept that has grown with us.
What question did you never ask in your magazine but would have liked to?
We don’t unusually make questions in our magazine, we just show the things, the art and the creators we see in the world.
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
We are not a maniacs, just because almost everything you can see in a magazine, you can find it on the net, or in the people, the streets, the films, the TV, etc… That’s the reason for which we offer original artworks.
