Exclusive Interview

Mistakes in our life provide us opportunities for learning

What is your magazine about?
IDPURE offers a comprehensive picture of the world of graphic design and visual creation in Switzerland and abroad. It also provides a meeting place between professionals and customers in the domain. Our table of contents has been designed to represent the full scope of the professions in the area of visual creation. Primarily visual, our magazine is designed to provide a source of information, inspiration and expression.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
The founder? Me my self, and I ?, but I have very creative people around to make each issue like it is a first time. As an outside creative force, I have to mention also Giovanni Riva who has been there from the start, giving us his creative energy. We are both graphic designers. I started my first year at ESAA (école supérieure d\'arts appliqués) in Vevey, Switzerland, followed by 4 years studding graphic design at ERACOM (école romande d\'arts et communication) in Lausanne, Switzerland, where I graduate in 1986. I also follow courses in the Academy of Arts of San Francisco for 1 year in 1997. In addition of the graphic designer part, I am a writer, secretary, and a manager. Multi-functional, that is what I call independent. Our motivation is to discover new talent and have the possibilities to present them in IDPURE. I was always interested and waiting to find a Swiss magazine about graphic design with incredible printing processes. Couldn’t wait longer…

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
We are a small but results driven team. There are actually 12 people who are working for IDPURE. One issue takes about 1 month to produce. They are 3 different steps to produce one issue. Finding the content, get the content, publish the content. We start on what ever subject we would like to talk about, what we would to discover and which artists we decide to present in IDPURE. Once we have all that, we make contacts to get all the information and material and then we lounge the production and design, the printing and finish by the distribution.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
An important first step was a magazine I created in 2002 called CreativePeople. A hard experience I made by choosing the wrong people. But in a way it helped me to build others projects like IDPURE and also to make better choices. Mistakes in our life provide us opportunities for learning and discovery which we hopefully will build on as we evolve.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Giving to the readers what they want to see and also showing to them what we think is good to know, what we like.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
Getting advertisers is a hard thing for a specialized magazine like IDPURE. We concentrate on quality to make the best and develop closer collaborations, partnerships. A larger distribution network would be highly appreciated.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
In your hands. All over the planet.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
idpure has been created for professionals in the domain of the graphic industries, creation and communication in Switzerland and abroad, communication agencies, freelancers, graphic designers, illustrators, designers, photographers, suppliers, printing offices, paper makers, computing, executives, decision-makers and agents. The target public of the magazine also includes consumers who cultivate a certain art of living, dynamic, creative, sensitive people, appreciating quality and having a critical and passionate vision and fascinated by the areas of communication and media. IDPURE is dedicated to professionals working in the graphic arts, images and design, as well as to those working in the areas of creation and visual communication. It is also addressed to people who are sensitive to and interested in their visual environments.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Being independent is always good. It is important for us but it is not a part of our strategy. It gives you more liberty, direct decisions, but also more risks. I also think that risk is good, it gives us no time to sleep on our desk and it gives us no space for “maybes.”

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
We try to get advertisers concern by our driven-editorials. Our advertisers are more like partners.

Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
Yes of course, TV is good.

Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
Yes they do. This is a very important point for our success. They also provide us opportunities. They give us a lot of printing advice and they are open to new techniques. They are not just there to make business. They understand what we are. They are also one of the best printers in Europe. Thanks to Domi.

Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
Etapes (from France) is a really good magazine, I knew the magazine when they where called BAT. WAD is great, and I like also Form and NOVUM, two very impressive and beautiful magazines. In the Swiss market you find also Abstract which is about design and architecture and Rendez-vous, two awsome magazines not to miss. The things we look in a magazine are most of all the ideas and creativity, the surprise of discovering something new or different.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
It is not so far and the first issue is already sold out. I think of it as a collector’s edition.

What question did you never ask in your magazine but would have liked to?
None… so far.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
I am not a maniac buying magazines, but I do buy about 10 to 15 magazines a month. The maniac part would be keeping them all. I do also buy a lot of Art books.
