Exclusive Interview
it is a very personal magazine
What is your magazine about?
It is about what I like, which encompasses fashion, music, photography and illustration predominantly.
Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
I make the magazine on my own – I was inspired to do it because I wanted to showcase my view on the world through the medium of print – I used to be slightly obsessed by magazines.
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
At the moment I put everything together myself, although I have a large team of talented contributors whom I direct. Each magazine takes 6 months to produce from the initial ideas and sorting out advertising / distribution etc, to when it gets on the shelves.
What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
I spent a lot of time talking about it before I did anything, and then a lot of time trying to find sponsors to help me, and trying to figure out production and distribution. I also taught myself how to design and edit. Nowadays I focus on finding innovative things to do with the content and production of the magazine, whilst expanding readership and distribution. I also want to find a way to get back to what I love doing most, which is taking photos.
Which are the key incredients for the success of your magazine?
I think it is a very personal magazine, and people like it for that – it is also a very collectable object and so people treasure it all the more.
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
If I had proper funding to take on staff and a proper office it would definitely make my life a lot easier. Advertising and distribution in particular are not very fun and take up an awful lot of my time. I would prefer to spend more time on the creative side.
Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
Either it will have become a style bible that people have grown to treasure, or it will have mutated into something else entirely, or it will be dead. I think it will have a finite shelf life, like all the best magazines.
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Everyone who has an interest in the creative arts - from students to art directors.
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Yes, I think it is a very important part of the feel of the magazine.
What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
I am not driven by advertising, but I do need it to survive. I am happy to put clothing in shoots if someone has advertised, and I am always open to interesting advertorial collaborations.
Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
Yes! I don’t understand the comparison!
Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
Yes, particularly because I do a lot of innovative things when it comes to the production of my magazine. My printer is very helpful in all aspects of production.
Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
I am not that influenced by any other magazine. I am more influenced by things around me and that I find in charity shops.
What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
I am very proud of it because it was my first baby! And it did exactly what I wanted it to do – which was sell out, and become highly collectable. It brought me the attention that has allowed the creation of further issues.
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
I don’t buy other magazines anymore, although I do read the Sunday newspaper supplements and I usually skim through the trashy gossip magazines whenever I go to the supermarket!
