What is your magazine about?
Pop culture: music, cinema, art, TV… and life
Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Roger Estrada and Daniel Pujal are the editors of Ortodòncia. They met working together at Playboy mag Spanish edition. Then Roger began working with Daniel at his Lallauna Studio in a cinema mag. Roger is graduated in cinema for ESCAC and has worked as writer for editorial projects. Daniel is a designer, co-founder of Lallauna Studio.
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
The team is: 2 editors and our beloved contributors. Not to forget our orthodontist, Joan Rossell, who allows us to make every cover possible
What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
1. The meeting of Roger & Daniel in Playboy: the seeds of Ortodòncia where planted there 2. A coffee conversation in which we decided to make it real 3. The launch of issue 01.
Which are the key incredients for the success of your magazine?
Its independency & freedom, the way we work out original approaches to the themes we depict in every issue; the contributors who bring us they work.
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
No fashion, no sponsors. The use of catalan.
Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
The mag as a platform to develop other cultural-related projects we love.
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
We’re starting to know them… Mainly, those who look at the world with curiosity and who enjoy to read a mag rather than to look a mag.
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Yes, definitely.
What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
We’d like to find someone who connects with our spirit, who believe in our project and who’d like to help us to keep it alive and real. Are we dreamers?
Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
Yes, we do. Good TV, if that concept is still out there, is a great entertainment tool and sometimes an educational one. Are we dreamers 2?
Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
We have a good relationship with them that has allowed us to print the mag below the standard costs. The printer is an important contributor for the mag, a key one, because it allows us to talk freely about the mag and its needs and he is able to cooperate with the project.
Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
We are mag readers and have our fave ones, but Ortodòncia’s birth had more to do with our unsatisfaction with local mags, more focused on very specific subjects, trendy approaches and what’s cool. We wanted to be a free, open-minded mag, with pop culture interests, focused on interesting themes no matter if they were or weren’t hip.
What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
From issue 0 to issue 01 we grew a lot… Too much, maybe… We’re trying to stay true to our philosophy on our issue 02, to solve the mistakes we’ve done and to grew without losing contact with our reality. We’re ambitious, but we don’t wanna die young…
What question did you never ask in your magazine but would have liked to?
Ever wore braces?
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
Mainly music & cinema mags, some art & design ones too. Not really maniacs…
