Exclusive Interview
a zebra crossing between contemporary art and design
What is your magazine about?
An interactive independent magazine about contemporary art and design. A creative editorial group for art projects. A graphic design studio.

Five guys, the same university degree, Graphic Design in Torino
the idea: a magazine that interacts with the senses.

Nello Russo: graphic designer / torino2006 web producer / visual artist in Venice
Otto Riello: photo editor / web producer / motoracer
Beppe Vaccariello: layout designer / tango dancer
Andrea Tambosco: 3D artist / winemaker
Paolo Stenech: graphic designer / excellent cook.
other members of the staff:
Anna Follo, Sarah Dewilde, Diego Moriondo
How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
Every issue takes about 3-4 months of hard work, for all 5 of us. We work as a team discussing every part of the magazine together.
We have the collaboration of an art contemporary critic as editor, 1 English translators and a press office and event manager
What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
Every issue is a very important step in the life of the magazine itself, because every issue has a different approach to creative process, it always includes new medias (web, video, artworks, etc.) and it gives new and stimulating inputs to the creative life of our group.
Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Interaction (the “PLAY” concept) and good contents, and the fact that each issue is completely different from the last one. Only the format is always the same!
What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
The economical side is always some sort of headache, we like to keep PLAYZEBRA a free magazine, but we also don’t like to depend on sponsors. We would like to find a sponsor that truly believes in our project and that will respect our decisions.
Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
International distribution. Best Seller on Mars
Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
University students, artists, designers, people involved in the contemporary art system, creative people in general, mom and dad.
Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Yes, of course… it’s a must for us!
What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
PLAYZEBRA is going to be an auto-production as much is possible.
No influence, no care about.
Adv/partners are important for magazine presentation and promotion events.
Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
I think so, but they should put the mute on.
Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
We trust him. It’s a confidence relationship… but he does not influences much our production.
Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
M-Publication, BACO and UOVO (our friends in Torino).
What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
So pretty and ingenuous, we were really youngsters.
What question did you never ask in your magazine but would have liked to?
What question did you never ask in your magazine but would have liked to?
How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
A lot, but never enough. We are not maniacs, we are only obsessive…
