Lula

What is your magazine about?
Lula is a fashion and lifestyle magazine with a difference. The main intention is to not take ourselves too seriously. Inspired by memories of childhood, dressing up and story books. It’s a playful and ethereal approach to art fashion and movies.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
Myself- Becky Smith Creative Director- Leith Clark- Editor.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
The team is very small- 3 key people really myself Leith and Charlotte Sanders- the features editor. We also have a few fashion editors but they are not based in London.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
First and foremost the initial decision to actually do it for ourselves (myself and Leith).

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Hopefully our readers find that we aren't intimidated as many fashion magazine can be.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
Having an office where everyone could be in the same place!

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
A more global audience, maybe some international editions translated in to different languages.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
I think it's a big mix from the very young to the old- and people like me!

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Yes very important we don't want to be made too commercial.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
Obviously we like to keep our advertisers happy but we like to be discrete about it and not let them effect our overall vision.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
I look back with fondness but I think we've come a long way since then and made it a lot better.

Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career.
Interview, The Face, Jackie, Vogue, french and Italian.

Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
I have a lot of old British Vogues from when I worked there, some date back to the 50's.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
Probably about 6 or 7 a month I like Grafik, Self service, French vogue, Wallpaper, Purple, I buy men's s magazines too, I particularly like Fantastic man.

We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Christophe Brunnquell- Purple/Tony Chambers- wallpaper/ Robin Derrick- Vogue/ Marissa Bourke- Elle/ Caroline Roberts- Grafik.
