What is your magazine about?
Architecture, design, and cities and how they relate to society and culture

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
The magazine was founded in London in 1983 by Peter Murray. The first editor was Deyan Sudjic. They want to set up a magazine that looked at design and architecture in the broadest possible context, and to see what those disciplines could tell us about the world.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
Our editorial team is four full-time staff and plenty of freelance contributors. Some of the features are planned a few months in advance, but mostly it comes together in 2-3 weeks before going to press.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
The appointment of a new editor is probably the greatest change. In its 23 years Blueprint has had five editors: Deyan Sudjic; Rowan Moore; Marcus Field; Grant Gibson; and me.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Irreverence; great writing; stunning photography and illustration.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
To be able to distribute our magazine to shops and readers more cheaply. Distributors and newsagents such as WH Smith have too much power to dictate what we read.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
With twice as many readers; and as always at the cutting edge of design.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Architects, interior designers, product designers, design students, curators, and design affectionados in many different areas.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
Independence of thought is fundamental

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
Blueprint is a great magazine to advertise in – but adverts never dictate what we do editorially

Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
It depends what they watch

Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
We have constant dialogue with the printer

Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
Magazines from many different sectors influence us. Inevitably each design magazine has its own character depending in its history and readership.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
If you mean the first issue in 1983, I think it looks amazingly fresh and exciting.

What question did you never ask in your magazine but would have liked to?
There are no limits on what questions I’ll ask in the magazine.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
More than 20. What does that make me?
