Exclusive Interview

S like s..

What is your magazine about?
These two quotes describes very well what we aim for when making the magazine.

It's always a pleasure shooting for S Magazine. Their unique style and originality casts a fun and playful view on photography, which allows photographers like myself to shoot more personal projects. -- Rankin.

I think that S Magazine has a daring and insightful view on fashion that stands at the crossroads of contemporary art and culture -- Jeremy Scott.

Who's behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
It doesn't make sense to talk about the founders since the magazine is made up of a team. Some have come onboard later than others but is as much part of the S family and on the hand a lot of people who started out on S is no longer with us so S is the combined sum of the team no matter who is part of it..

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
Trade secret....no we work with submissions so we collect the things we like and then take it from there or if we like a particular photographer we approach him to start a dialogue on en editorial. our team is between 10-15 people depending on different things.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
The first decision to actually do the magazine and secondly building up such a strong base in New York with a team of fantastic people that take there fair share of the credit for having moved the magazine to the next level.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Good contributors, long hours, lots of travel, and hard work.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be the thing to help the magazine to improve?
Money its always an issue especially as an independent publisher that doesn't have the benefit of being backed by a large corporate machine, but again then you just have to be creative in the solutions for everyday problems.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
World domination.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Everybody who have a love for magazines, art and fashion. But have a mind of their own and has grown tired of the traditional magazines conformity.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
It is one of the corner stones of S Magazine so unless someone comes by and say "hey your do a fantastic job keep doing it and we back you financially without interfering with the creative part" then we will probably still run it as a independent adventure.

What's your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
They don't get to have a say on the editorials but as we are a fashion magazine we do follow the trends in the styling and the fashion seasons.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
It is still a blast and so different from what else you could find back then the world and look of magazines have changed a lot in the past few years but back then it really made a different I still think its a great issue the overall quality has been heighten considerably and should since else we weren't doing our job. But some of the stories as stand alone pieces are phenomenal and the best we ever have showcased.

Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career.
I can t say i am inspired by other magazine as a whole i love some other magazines that i believe is at the front of the rest.

Purple who have found a formula that works and works good you might say the different issues have to much the same feel/look to them but since the quality and editorial voice are so strong it carries trough we bravura.

The other one is Karen Magazine which is a gem that deserves a much wider audience.

Also Rojo from Spain I enjoy.

Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
We keep back issues and i actually have made a deal with American Apparel so they sell all of the back issues on their different web-shops. My favorite issue is the newest it is the best we have done so far on all accounts.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
A lot, but we buy them for the office.

We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
Karen from Karen Magazine. Olivier Zahm from Purple.
