"The multi-perspectivist view is an expression of democracy"

What is your magazine about?
Bob is a culture magazine. Each issue of Bob is about a single topic – Bob being mono-thematic – which is viewed from the most diverse angles – Bob being multi-perspectivist. The magazine Bob is a forum that invites young authors to send in their independent contributions.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
The editor of Bob is Club Bellevue. Club Bellevue is a group of four persons, working in different fields of creative industries and science. Alois Gstöttner (graphic designer), Wolfgang Haas (textworker, philosopher, mediator), Anais Horn (information designer) and Kira Kirsch (culture management). The motivation to produce the magazine Bob: The present demands discussion, discourse needs a space to be articulated. As an open platform Club Bellevue discusses and publishes topical issues of what can be called the electric field of culture, art and society. We like to work multidisciplinary, being a forum for artists and practical and theoretical experts of various fields. We like to produce a magazine, which shows aspects of our everyday life and touches our reality. Bob experiments with contemporary problems and develops positions and approaches for action. The multi-perspectivist view is an expression of democracy, gives speech to minorities, shows different realities and complexity instead of chunk food information.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
Answer: Every issue of Bob has its special topic. We invite people to contribute to the issue by sending out a call for papers. People write back a short exposé and participate. Therefore we are able to publish young talents as well as people who are already well known experts within the topic. The main team of Bob are four persons. About 70 persons work within every issue of Bob.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
Answer: Finding a magazine concept we like. Getting the right people together, working on it. Getting the cash to produce it.

Which are the key incredients for the success of your magazine?
Answer: The mono-thematic and multi-perspectivist concept; the call for papers; a powerful and self-critical team.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
A good network of motivated, creative and critical people and money

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Readers of BOB are highly interested in social phenomena and proceedings. In their concept of their lives creativity plays an important role, it is at the same time providing sense and a way to their own goals. For them life means to meat necessities differently, to discover something new, to make all embracing experiences and to cherish the way as much as the accomplished goal.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
We like to cooperate with others and we like being independent.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
We are clear about what is advertise in our magazine and what is our writers taste and choice.

Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
Watching TV and reading magazines are pretty different things. I can’t see a reason, why we should stop watching TV, when we buy a magazine.

Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
He produces good quality for a fair price, but he does not have a main role in the development of Bob.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
We like it and the experience of getting better.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
I buy some special interest magazines (art, football) but not many enough to call myself an magazine – maniac. E-mail interview from “20.04.2006”. © Colophon2007.com – Mike Koedinger Editions SA (Luxembourg)
