Founded in 2004

Spike evolved from an unusual alliance: the cooperation between exponents of the art scene and a strong Austrian magazine publishing house. Chief editor Rita Vitorelli and the Viennese Kunstverein "New Art Club" have won the "Sportmagazin Verlag" over to close a gap within the Austrian magazine market: a magazine exclusive for current art in high edition and optimated distribution that appeals to a broad publicity but – concerning content and form – is totally up to the recent art life. Since 2009 the magazine is run independently by Rita Vitorelli and Susanna Hoffmann-Ostenhof. The appearance is based on the concept of Art Director Christoph Steinegger (Hamburg).

What is your magazine about?
Contemporary art

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
It is a collaboration between “New Art Club” (Vienna) and the Austrian publishing company “Sportmagazin GmbH & Co KG” – the cooperation has been initiated by the artist Rita Vitorelli who is now editor in chief. How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
There are 3-4 permant employees working continously on 4 issues/year. The art director is a freelancer, as well as our authors. Involved are also several employees of the publisher’s house (producers etc.)

Money

We love advertisements, we want more of it / no, it doesn’t directly influence the content / yes, we are working on it to get some

Do you think that magazine readers still need to watch TV?
Definitely

Which is your relationship with your printer? Does he play a main role in your development?
No special relationship / no

Which magazines did influence you most? What are you looking for in other magazines?
Artforum, Avalanche / Featured artists and writers, advertisements, look

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
Was ok but not perfect

What question did you never ask in your magazine but would have liked to?
Why are there so few good critics?
