Colophon 2011

Exclusive Interview

Idn

What is your magazine about?
Visual aesthetics and Creative cultures.

Who’s behind the project? Tell us about the founders, their backgrounds and their motivations!
From someone who has entrenhed in the industry for many many years and with sheer passion, Laurence created IdN Magazine since 1992. He's still very much involved in the day-to-day running of IdN as the Publisher. Our relatively small team consists of people who's really good at doing what they're not suppose to; and ironically giving us flexibility, sustaniability and ability to adapt.

How do you produce one issue? How much time do you spend on it? How big is your team?
We have a team of around then people, and start each issue from scratch, it takes us more than half a year to move from the ideas stage to published magazine.

What have been the important steps in the life of your magazine?
A major step for us was the decision to host design conferences back in the early 00's.

Which are the key ingredients for the success of your magazine?
Our key success relies on you. The creative people out there that keeps on truckin' and staying fresh. Our job here in IdN merely serves as a catalysts.

What are the difficulties you are confronted with? What would be “the” thing to help the magazine to improve?
One of the major difficulties that we are confronted with is staying abreast of ever-changing technology, which means being aware that the Internet is becoming an increasingly important source of information for many people, and we have to make sure that our magazine offers something unique, something which the Internet does not provide.

Where do you want the magazine to be in five years?
Hopefully in five years times the magazine's influence and reach will have further extended among creative people everywhere.

Tell us about your audience! Who are the readers of your magazine?
Most of them are designers or people working in creative industries.

Is remaining independent important to you? Is it part of the strategy?
For now, being independent is the only way that allows us to do what we do.

What’s your relationship with advertisement? Does it influence your content? Do you care about advertising-driven-editorials?
Advertisements are an essential part of many magazines, however, having said that they play a minor role in IdN and have little, if any influence on our editorial decisions. IdN is for the people, by the people.

What do you think of your issue 01, when you look back at it?
That's going back a long time! 15 years! Of course, a lot changes in a decade and a half. The first issue still lives up to the high standards of quality we demand at IdN today, however, the content is completely different. At that time, IdN looked at a lot of what where then the latest tools, such as design software. A lot of this was new and people didnt know how to use them or what was on the market.

Magazine favorite(s) that inspired you in your career.
All.

Do you keep old copies of magazines? If so, what is your favorite in your collection?
Of course! But there are far too many here for me to pick a favourite.

How many magazines do you buy / get / read each month? Do you qualify yourself a maniac?
Somewhere between 10 and 20. We have people in the office who sniffs freak ink from newly printed IdNs or any other magazines for that matter. Unsure if we are qualify as a maniac.

We are compiling answers from some of the most innovative magazine makers around the world today. Who else should we ask?
None.
