“Editorial design: independents and the mainstream”
From the 1960s onwards the design of independent magazines has influenced their mainstream competitors. This is a visual history of some of these relationships.

By Simon Esterson (UK)

Esterson is an editorial designer. He was the launch art director of the architecture and design magazine Blueprint and later creative director of Italian architecture monthly Domus. He is now creative director and part owner of Eye, the international review of graphic design.

This should be made public - Grande Finale
this should be made public

‘Publishing’ by definition means ‘making something public’ –
A strong and loaded act, historically, politically and culturally. but:
What is it that we really want to ‘make public’ today?
In workshops and public interventions we have gathered the responses of people in Luxembourg,
Cairo, Milan and Bangkok. These many different responses – ranging from humorous to serious,
from spontaneous to elaborate – have been assembled on this large wall newspaper.
While this is by no means an objective opinion poll, it however gives an insight into the issues and
concerns of the people in these diverse places – material that will possibly trigger for further
discussions and reactions.

‘This should be made public’ is a project by shift! [www.shift.de] and was originally conceived for Colophon 2007. All responses in their original design and language are archived at www.flickr.com/photos/this_should_be_made_public
